Webuild: eleventh caisson positioned for the New Genoa Breakwater
Genoa, July 19, 2025 – The eleventh mega caisson of the new Genoa Breakwater has been positioned on the seabed off the coast of the city. This is one of the most complex maritime engineering projects currently under construction in Europe, built by the PerGenova Breakwater consortium led by Webuild on behalf of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority.
The infrastructure, developed entirely offshore, represents a strategic intervention for the competitiveness of the Port of Genoa and the entire logistics system of Northern Italy. Once completed, the dam will reach a total length of 6.2 kilometers and will be laid at depths of up to 50 meters — the deepest ever designed for a breakwater dam in Europe. The structure will allow access to the port for next-generation ships up to 400 meters long, strengthening the role of the Ligurian port within the Rhine-Alps Corridor of the TEN-T network.
The installation of the eleventh caisson is part of an ongoing construction process that has already seen the placement of over 2,200 tonnes of gravel and the creation of nearly 39,000 underwater columns to consolidate the seabed. The submerged columns built to date amount to 454,000 linear meters, more than half of the total planned for the project.
The New Breakwater Dam is a project that combines engineering innovation, environmental sustainability, and a strategic vision for the future of Italian logistics. In synergy with the Terzo Valico dei Giovi One Project - Genoa Junction, also being carried out by Webuild, it will help create an integrated and modern infrastructure system capable of meeting the challenges of mobility and global trade.
