MILAN, June 11, 2019 – Salini Impregilo Chief Executive Pietro Salini speaks with global magazine Monocle about the Group as a driving force behind the expansion of public transport in cities throughout the world given its leadership in sustainable mobility. As a builder of metro lines, it is involved in nine metro projects, including the Grand Paris Express, Cityringen in Copenhagen and the Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth. The number of projects in which it is taking part is bound to rise with Progetto Italia (Project Italy), an operation that Salini Impregilo is planning to consolidate the infrastructure sector in its home market.

The interview, published in the latest issue of Monocle, pays particular attention to the M4 metro line under construction in Milan, with photos and descriptions of a tunnel-boring machine working its way towards Piazza San Babila, one of the line’s future stops. The line will provide the world’s fastest connection between the centre of a city and an airport: a mere 12 minutes. It will have an initial start in 2021, serving one station – Forlanini FS - after Linate airport. When the entire line is open to the public, it will be able to transport 86 million people a year and contribute to removing some 16 million cars from the streets a year, resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions by 54,000 tonnes a year.

These numbers highlight the importance of metro lines as well as high-speed trains in helping cities cope with the demands of a growing population by expanding public transport services, reducing the need for a car, easing traffic and improving the quality of the air.

Monocle reiterates this point in describing the Group as an “infrastructure-building powerhouse” whose “work benefits millions”.
