Building Sicily of tomorrow, today
Webuild for Sicily: infrastructures that create value!
In Sicily, Webuild is committed in the construction of 8 projects, with a total value of approximately €6.9 billion, related to seven sections of the high-capacity railway line Palermo-Catania-Messina, an integral part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the trans-European network TEN-T, as well as Lot 1 of the Ragusa-Catania motorway axis.
These are large-scale projects aimed at transforming and innovating the infrastructure system of the region, enhancing sustainable mobility, and promising to generate a strong employment boost and significant economic benefits for the area: it is estimated that there will be up to 7,000 jobs created, among direct staff and third parties, while the supply chain from the start of work includes approximately 1,700 companies.
Overall, the seven contracts for the Palermo-Catania-Messina route provide for the design and construction of approximately 200 kilometers of new railway line, which aim to ensure the interconnection and interoperability of the line (in accordance with European standards), a better connection between the island's internal areas and the three coastal cities, and increased capacity and speed of transport.
The entire infrastructure will make rail transport more competitive compared to road transport, reducing travel times to 2 hours between Catania and Palermo (60 minutes less than current travel times) and to 45 minutes between Messina and Catania (30 minutes less). The railway works are carried out by Webuild on behalf of RFI - GruppoFS.
Webuild is also carrying out the doubling and modernization of the Ragusa-Catania Motorway (Lot 1, 18 km), also known as "Ragusana", a strategic corridor for eastern Sicily, which will connect the provinces of Ragusa, Catania, and Syracuse, benefiting both travel times for people and goods, as well as service and safety levels for traffic.
The presence and commitment of the Webuild Group in Sicily dates back to the 1930s and has completed over 70 large-scale projects in total. The first infrastructure dates back to 1933, a road in the Caltanissetta area, followed shortly after by the construction of the Disueri dam. Since 2023, the Group has also activated Roboplant and Etnaplant in Belpasso (CT), two state-of-the-art production facilities for precast elements that supply Webuild construction sites.
