For 120 years we have been building infrastructure for the future

EVOLUTIO

Webuild’s immersive exhibition dedicated to the infrastructures that have transformed Italy

Milan - National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci
11 February – 7 April 2026
EVOLUTIO - Il Racconto del curatore

Evolutio is a journey between past and future featuring previously unpublished photos and videos, immersive and interactive installations, cultural insights and historical testimony.

The Evolutio Exhibition illustrates how Italy’s journey over the past century has progressed in parallel with the development of infrastructure works—dams, water systems, metro networks, buildings, railways, motorways, and bridges—that have continuously raised living standards.

Having or not having access to water; having or lacking energy; being able—or unable—to move freely: these are all conditions that make a decisive difference in the quality of life of communities. The Evolutio Exhibition recounts the story of Italy’s social and economic progress over the last 120 years—a narrative of a country that has grown through infrastructure. A story of ingenuity and craftsmanship.

The exhibition features an immersive, multimedia travelling experience which, following its Rome stop, continues at the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci in Milan. Through photographs, installations, videos, and testimonies, it presents a city that offers tangible examples of transformation—such as metro systems, bridges, and urban regeneration projects—strengthening its competitiveness and international appeal, while highlighting the impact of infrastructure on people’s lives and on the country’s transformation.

“The power of work” – Un video di Yuri Ankarani.

EVOLUTIO, MORE THAN A MUSEUM: AN ECOSYSTEM OF SHARED KNOWLEDGE AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY

EVOLUTIO, MORE THAN A MUSEUM: AN ECOSYSTEM OF SHARED KNOWLEDGE AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY

Born from Webuild’s immense digital archive, this exhibition draws on 1.5 million iconic photos and videos documenting 120 years of infrastructure milestones.

This legacy is the foundation of the Evolutio Digital Museum, a permanent platform of 12,000 images and more than 400 projects that illustrates how nations evolve through their infrastructure.

"EVOLUTIO" - What would life be like without major infrastructure projects?

It would be like going back to the early 20th century, when people in Italy lived without running water, without electricity, without roads. Not everywhere, of course, but overall this was the reality—especially among the most vulnerable social groups and territories, where living conditions are the true litmus test of a country’s development.

Without infrastructures, Italy would be a different country: less connected, less competitive, less inclusive. Infrastructures determine real development—the kind that affects the quality of life of people, communities, and regions.

EVOLUTIO is a cultural initiative by Webuild that introduces a new narrative on infrastructures as a driver of economic, social, and industrial development, capable of fueling an entire productive and financial ecosystem.

A narrative that brings together memory and future, showing how major works have helped shape the country over the past 120 years and how they stand today as a strategic asset for Italy’s current and future competitiveness.

EVOLUTIO unfolds in two complementary dimensions: the physical Exhibition and the digital Museum.
