Lake Mead: global tunnelling project of the year

NEWS

December 4, 2015 – Lake Mead project triumphs at the NCE Tunnelling & Underground Space Awards 2015 ceremony, picking up the Global Tunnelling Project of the Year (over $500 million). On its sixth edition, the event held on Dec. 3 in London brought together experts from around the world including clients like designers and contractors.

The award brings to a fitting end the completion of the project to guarantee the supply of nearly 4,5 million cubic metres per day to Las Vegas and the surrounding area. The project set records in the world of tunnelling: workers drilling under the tunnel under the lakebed were exposed to water pressures of up to 15 bars.

Lake Mead was among seven finalist, among them the Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Programme, the Niagara Tunnel Project, Hong Kong and London Power Tunnels.

The award arrives a few days earlier at the International Tunnelling Awards ITA where Salini Impregilo was named “Contractor of the Year”, beating out its Chinese, American and European rivals.
