Webuild: Genoa’s New Breakwater advances in open sea with installation of 24th caisson
The mega project being built by the Webuild-led consortium pushes ahead after hitting the one-kilometre milestone. Operations continue between the giant concrete factory in Vado and seabed consolidation works
MILAN, June 14, 2026 – Genoa’s New Breakwater keeps growing at a rapid pace. Just days after surpassing the one-kilometre milestone, the Webuild-led consortium has successfully installed the 24th caisson. This marks another step forward for the project being built by the PerGenova Breakwater Consortium on behalf of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, driven by a complex, coordinated effort of workers and machinery operating between land and sea.
The construction site’s organizational efficiency and the full operational capacity of the teams involved remain key factors in delivering one of the most strategic infrastructure projects for the Italian port system. The latest caisson—measuring 40 metres in length, 25 metres in width, and 18.70 metres in height—reached its final position on the seabed through a complex series of marine operations. These were conducted in compliance with the strictest safety standards, despite occasionally challenging weather and sea conditions.
