Group's success thanks to strategic vision of Progetto Italia to develop sustainable infrastructure in Italy and abroad with entire supply chain
MILAN, June 25, 2021 – “We are honoured to be part of the consortium that has been chosen as preferred bidder for the North East Link sustainable mobility project in Melbourne. It is the crowning achievement of our commitment to a country where we plan to put down roots for the long term. It is an accomplishment that will be transformational for the Group, and it comes just a few days after the signing of another important contract to build a high-speed railway in Texas in the United States,” said Pietro Salini, Chief Executive of Webuild, following news of the announcement in Australia. The contract foresees the consortium excavate twin tunnels each with three lanes to complete the city’s highway network.
“The results that the Group is producing in strategic markets like the United States and Australia are in addition to the positive news in Italy, especially in the south. We have won projects for high-speed/high-capacity railways between Naples and Bari, and between Messina and Catania. We are working on about 20 projects along with a supply chain of 7,000 small- and medium-sized businesses in Italy. After years of underinvestment, the country is heading in the right direction to develop sustainable mobility – and we are ready to help,” added Salini. “What we have achieved in these last few days is the result of a strategic vision that has seen the Group change skin in recent years: from the creation in 2014 of a national champion that saw the Salini company join its know-how with that of Impregilo, to the Group’s expansion in the United Sates with the acquisition of Lane in 2016. Today, we are in the midst of another acquisition, bringing into the Group Astaldi’s unique expertise in design and engineering as part of Progetto Italia, an initiative undertaken with the support of CDP Equity, Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit and Banco BPM. This has allowed us to gain greater scale.”
