NAPLES, November 15, 2025Capodichino Station on Naples Metro Line 1, one of the key projects to enhance urban mobility in the city, has surpassed 95% completion and is approaching its final phase. The project, built by Webuild on behalf of Metropolitana di Napoli SpA and the Municipality of Naples, was visited today by Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, who reviewed the work in progress on site.

The station, to be operated by ANM (Azienda Napoletana Mobilità), is part of the Line 1 extension, which already spans over 20 kilometres with 20 stations. Once inaugurated, it will allow the international Capodichino Airport to be connected to the city centre in just 9 minutes. Naples will be among the few cities in the world to have a metro line directly linking the three major hubs of urban mobility: the port, the airport, and the railway network, including the high-speed train service.

Its steel roof – one of the most iconic elements of the project – is a structure 8 metres high and weighing 450 tons, inspired by the shape of an airport hangar and distinguished by its innovative “steel web” design. Work is underway to complete the atrium with glass fixtures and metal cladding, as well as install eight central panoramic elevators leading down to the platforms. These elevators have been custom-designed to withstand high-intensity earthquakes.

The architectural concept, designed by Ivan Harbour of London-based RSHP and built by Webuild in partnership with Moccia Irme, draws inspiration from Orvieto’s famous Pozzo di San Patrizio, a Renaissance masterpiece, plunging 54 metres deep. The Capodichino Station will feature a single open circular space, approximately 33 metres in diametre and 50 metres deep, served by eight central elevators and four helical staircases spiraling along the walls up to the street-level atrium. The project also includes three service shafts for tunnel-boring machines (TBMs), each about 50 metres deep – two of which assigned to the excavation of a substrata for Capodichino-Poggioreale section and one connecting to Di Vittorio Station on the EAV line, enabling closure of the loop between Line 1 and Line 11.

Webuild has been active in Campania since the 1980s, delivering landmark projects such as Naples-Afragola High-Speed Station, designed by Zaha Hadid, and some of the city’s most iconic “Art Stations”, including the award-winning Toledo and Monte Sant’Angelo, recently opened to the public. The Group is also building Line 7 of Naples Metro, where works on Parco San Paolo Station have surpassed 50 percent completion.

Projects underway in Campania are part of Webuild’s broader commitment to Southern Italy, including islands, with contracts worth a total award value of €15 billion, providing jobs for 8,700 people (as of June 30, 2025), including direct and third-party personnel, and involving 7,600 direct suppliers since the start of works. In the South of Italy, Webuild is engaged in strategic sustainable mobility projects, including two sections of Salerno–Reggio Calabria high-speed line and four sections of the Naples–Bari high-speed/high-capacity line, aimed at boosting connectivity across the region.
