Webuild: Genoa’s New Breakwater exceeds 1.6 km in length

Progress on one of Europe’s most important maritime infrastructure projects

New caisson placed: new breakwater reaches total length of 1,630 meter
Offshore operations and superstructure construction advancing in parallel
Strategic project to accommodate next-generation ships, strengthen Genoa’s role as Mediterranean logistics hub and gateway to European markets

MILAN, October 5, 2026 – Construction proceeds on Genoa’s New Breakwater — one of the most significant maritime projects underway in Europe — being carried out by the PerGenova Breakwater Consortium, led by Webuild, on behalf of the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority. Early this morning, a new caisson was put in place, bringing the new infrastructure’s total length to 1,630 metres and confirming the steady progress of a project that will redefine the operational capacity and competitiveness of the Ligurian port.

Work is proceeding on multiple fronts. Offshore operations — including dredging, seabed consolidation, and the raising of the breakwater superstructure — are advancing, while production of the caissons required to complete the project proceeds at a steady pace: 24 hours a day at the Vado Ligure yard.

The New Breakwater is a strategic investment for the future of the Ligurian port and the national logistics system. It will strengthen Italy’s role along key international trade routes. Once completed, it will enable safe access to the Port of Genoa for the latest generation of container ships, boosting the efficiency of connections between the Mediterranean and European logistics corridors and helping to consolidate Genoa’s role as a strategic gateway for international trade, thereby supporting the country's overall economic growth.
