Unionport Bridge over Westchester Creek in the Bronx completed, replacing a 1950s-era bascule bridge

New structure features two side-by-side, single-leaf bascule spans, each supporting three lanes of traffic 

Includes dedicated pedestrian walkway and protected bike lane, supporting New York City’s Vision Zero and sustainable mobility goals, plus advanced mechanical and electrical systems for rapid bridge lifts and safe marine navigation

MILAN, December 9, 2025 – Lane, the U.S. subsidiary of the Webuild Group, has delivered the Unionport Bridge, the new bascule bridge over Westchester Creek along the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx, New York. The $232-million project replaces the original 1950s-era bridge and serves as a critical link for tens of thousands of commuters every day. 

The new Unionport Bridge connects key arteries such as the Cross Bronx Expressway, Bruckner Expressway, and Hutchinson River Parkway, improving safety, mobility, and connectivity between Bronx neighborhoods and major regional corridors. Designed for a 75-year service life, the infrastructure features two side-by-side, single-leaf bascule spans, each supporting three lanes of traffic, and integrates a dedicated pedestrian walkway and a protected bike lane, supporting New York City’s Vision Zero and sustainable mobility objectives. Advanced mechanical and electrical systems enable rapid bridge lifts and safe marine navigation, while enhanced lighting, signage and safety systems ensure better user experience and visibility. 

Construction was managed in phases to keep open road and maritime traffic, meeting New York City Department of Transportation’s goals for safety, durability, and community impact. Lane and its partner, Schiavone Construction Co. LLC, now SPC Construction Co. LLC, led the project, coordinating complex marine, structural and traffic management operations. 

With this project, Lane strengthens its position in the U.S. market for complex infrastructure, while Webuild confirms its global expertise in bridge and viaduct construction, with over 1,000 kilometres of bridges and viaducts completed worldwide, including iconic works such as the Genoa San Giorgio Bridge in Italy, the Long Beach International Gateway Bridge in California, the Second Bosphorus Bridge in Turkey, and the Sydney Metro Northwest skytrain viaduct in Australia.
