Webuild: excavation completed on Lima Metro Line 2, Peru’s first fully underground metro service

Twenty-seven kilometres of tunnels completed beneath one of Latin America’s most congested metropolitan areas
The new line will reduce travel times between Ate and Callao from more than 2 hours and 45 minutes to approximately 45 minutes, crossing the heart of the Peruvian capital
The project will connect residential districts, universities, industrial areas, the Port of Callao and Callao Airport, reshaping daily mobility for millions of people

MILAN, July 13, 2026Excavation works are complete on the new Line 2 of Metro de Lima, the largest urban mobility infrastructure project to be undertaken in the capital of Peru. With the breakthrough of the final diaphragm wall at Station 4, Webuild and its consortium partners have completed the 27 kilometres of tunnels planned for the route, marking a major milestone towards the completion of the country’s first fully underground metro line.

The two tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) deployed on the project, each equipped with a cutterhead measuring more than 10 metres in diametre, operated at depths exceeding 12 metres beneath the streets of the Peruvian capital. The line runs along the main transport corridor linking districts Ate and Callao, connecting the eastern part of Lima with Peru’s biggest port and Jorge Chávez International Airport.

The Metro de Lima project, delivered by Webuild in consortium with European and local partners, includes the construction and operation under concession of Line 2 and a section of Line 4, for a total of 35 kilometres of underground lines, 35 stations, 36 ventilation and emergency shafts, and two rail depots. The new line will enable passengers to cross the city from east to west in approximately 45 minutes, compared with the more than two and a half hours currently required above ground under the most congested traffic conditions.

The project enters the next phase, with work focusing on track-laying, the installation of technological and operating systems, and the completion of the stations that will form Peru’s first fully underground public transport system.

Line 2 runs along one of the most strategic urban corridors in the Lima–Callao metropolitan area, connecting residential neighbourhoods, university campuses, commercial centres, industrial districts and logistics infrastructure. It will dramatically reduce travel times, improve journey reliability and reconnect parts of the metropolitan area currently separated by chronic traffic congestion, expanding access to employment, education and services for millions of citizens.

Completion of the tunnel work confirms Webuild’s leadership in the delivery of complex underground projects and sustainable mobility infrastructure. With nearly 900 kilometres of metro lines and approximately 3,500 kilometres of tunnels completed worldwide, the Group is involved in some of the most advanced infrastructure projects under development globally, including the Grand Paris Express in France, the Rome Metro’s Line C in Italy, and the extension of the Red Line of Riyadh Metro in Saudi Arabia.
