Pedemontana Lombarda Motorway: Italian Deputy Minister Edoardo Rixi makes technical inspection at Biassono tunnel construction site
BIASSONO, Italy, October 21, 2025 – Today, Italian Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, conducted a technical inspection at the Biassono tunnel construction site, one of the strategic sites of the new Pedemontana Lombarda motorway.
In attendance, alongside the Deputy Minister and Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda, were Claudia Maria Terzi, Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Public Works; Gianantonio Arnoldi, CEO of Cal; representatives from Pedelombarda Nuova, Webuild, and Impresa Pizzarotti & C.; project engineers; and local authorities.
The visit provided an opportunity to examine the progress of the works and the engineering solutions adopted for the construction.
The site is located within the municipality of Biassono, between kilometre markers 8+950 and 9+700. During the visit, three key points along the route were presented:
- DT04 Earth Depot: a temporary area designated for storing excavated soil and rock, which will later be reused in the construction;
- Biassono Tunnel 2: a 630-metre-long structure built using the “Milan” method, which involves constructing the tunnel between reinforced concrete diaphragm walls. Excavation and diaphragm wall construction are currently underway;
- Trench 09: an open-air motorway section approximately 100 metres long, built between two reinforced concrete diaphragm walls with tie rods. Excavation and structural completion are also in progress here.
The Pedemontana Lombarda motorway is a strategic infrastructure for regional mobility, aiming to improve connectivity between Lombardy’s provinces, reduce traffic congestion, and promote a smoother, more sustainable motorway system. The Biassono tunnel is part of sections B2 and C, currently under construction, which will extend the motorway to Vimercate and then to Agrate Brianza.
During the inspection, Deputy Minister Edoardo Rixi emphasised the importance of the project for the Lombardy region: "Pedemontana Lombarda is a strategic infrastructure that connects regions, businesses, and people, strengthening the competitiveness of one of Europe’s most dynamic areas. Today we assessed the progress on-site: from tunnels to temporary roads, from environmental mitigation measures agreed with local authorities to adherence to the project timeline. Completing Pedemontana is a tangible investment in economic growth and transport sustainability. My thanks go to all the workers involved in this strategic project for the future of our country’s mobility."
"Pedemontana is a key project to improve road infrastructure, development, and connectivity in the Brianza and Lombardy areas. Today's visit, together with Deputy Minister Edoardo Rixi, to the section C site at Biassono confirms the commitment of the Lombardy Region to completing the Pedemontana road system, which is among our top priorities and also our most important and challenging infrastructure goal," said Claudia Maria Terzi, Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Public Works. "It’s important to remember that the essence of the project as a whole is that of an infrastructure that crosses the territory, serves it, and contributes to its transformation and evolution."
"Pedemontana Lombarda is a great opportunity not only for the Region but also for Italy and its infrastructure system, especially in Brianza, where a project that enhances mobility and connectivity is essential for the strategic competitiveness of the area," stated Luigi Roth, President of Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda."The motorway sections under construction represent both a testing ground for new technologies, with an eye toward future transportation, and a model of sustainability. In synergy and dialogue with local authorities, we will continue with the utmost commitment to enhance its unique characteristics."
