Mariani Viaduct on SS76 officially inaugurated, fully reopened to traffic

Connection restored along strategic Perugia–Ancona corridor, linking inland areas to Adriatic Coast

MILAN, July 29, 2026 – The Mariani Viaduct along State Road 76 (SS76) was officially inaugurated today, fully reopening to traffic as part of the Marche–Umbria Quadrilateral project delivered by Webuild on behalf of ANAS (FS Italiane Group). With the viaduct fully operational, traffic continuity has been restored along the Perugia–Ancona route, one of the most important transport corridors of Central Italy, which connects the regions of Umbria and Marche with the Adriatic Coast, and facilitating travel, business and freight movements.

The inauguration marks the completion of a particularly complex engineering effort, as well as a major milestone in the development of the quadrilateral. The viaduct resolves one of the critical issues along the SS76, improving traffic flow, road safety and accessibility in the area.

Following a partial reopening in recent weeks, the completion of all remaining works enables the full use of the viaduct, removing restrictions that had affected traffic between the inland areas of Umbria and Marche and the Adriatic Coast in recent years. The viaduct will deliver lasting benefits in terms of reduced travel times, smoother traffic flows and improved transport connections for both people and goods.

From a technical standpoint, the works included widening the viaduct with the construction of a new pier and abutment, the installation of a new span measuring approximately 30 metres, and the upgrading of the systems in the Sassi Rossi 2 tunnel (572 metres long) and the Sassi Rossi 1 tunnel (141 metres long) to the latest safety and operational standards. The completion of the viaduct project was made possible thanks to the collaboration of all stakeholders involved, including the Marche Region, ARPAM, AST, Quadrilatero, ANAS and the Municipality of Genga.

The full reopening of the Mariani Viaduct represents one of the most significant steps toward the completion of the Marche–Umbria Quadrilateral Maxi Lot 2 project, an initiative designed to substantially strengthen connectivity between the Marche and Umbria regions while supporting the competitiveness, attractiveness and cohesion of the areas of the Central Apennines.        

Maxi Lot 2 includes work along the SS318 between Pianello and Valfabbrica, the SS76 in the Fossato di Vico–Cancelli and Albacina–Serra San Quirico sections, as well as the first four sections of the Pedemontana delle Marche road. The progressive completion of these works will help consolidate a modern and integrated infrastructure network capable of improving access to inland areas and creating new opportunities for economic and social development.
