Webuild: Mariani Viaduct on SS76 along Marche–Umbria Quadrilateral reopens to traffic
Maxi lot 2 nears completion
Southbound roadway of the Mariani Viaduct reopened to traffic
Opening improves traffic flow along Perugia–Ancona corridor
MILAN, July 1st, 2026 – The Mariani Viaduct on the SS76 has reopened to traffic as part of the Marche–Umbria Quadrilateral road network project, being delivered by Webuild on behalf of ANAS (FS Italiane Group). The southbound roadway has now opened to traffic, with one of its lanes accessible to vehicles. The reopening restores continuity along the Perugia–Ancona corridor, removing one of the main bottlenecks along the route and reducing detours and delays that have affected traffic flows between the inland areas and the coast in recent years.
The section, approximately 2.2 kilometres long on the southbound roadway, had been closed since 2018. Its reopening improves traffic flow and eases pressure on local roads that had been used as alternative routes during the closure. The work required environmental assessments, remediation activities and design updates. Work resumed at the end of 2025 thanks to coordination among institutions and technical stakeholders, including the Marche Region, ARPAM, AST, Quadrilatero, ANAS and the Municipality of Genga.
From a technical standpoint, the work involved widening the viaduct by building a new pier and abutment, as well as installing a new span of approximately 30 metres. The tunnel systems of Sassi Rossi 2 (572 metres) and Sassi Rossi 1 (141 metres) were also upgraded to meet current standards. At this stage, traffic along the viaduct is running in one lane in either direction, while work continues on the overpass lanes, a solution that allows activities to be completed while keeping the road open and ensuring safety for both users and workers.
The reopening marks a significant step towards the delivery schedule for Maxi Lot 2, whose completion is expected by the end of the month. Once fully operational, the infrastructure will help reduce travel times along the corridor and improve safety by decreasing traffic interference within urban areas.
Maxi Lot 2 includes work on the SS318 and SS76 corridors (Fossato di Vico–Cancelli section) as well as the first two phases of the Pedemontana della Marche. Completion of the subsequent phases will create a cross-regional connection between Umbria and Marche, eliminating the remaining interruptions along the route. For users, this will mean being able to travel directly without detours between Perugia and the Adriatic coast, benefitting from shorter journey times and smoother traffic flows, including on sections currently affected by congestion or served by local roads.
Overall, the project involves the construction of an approximately 67-kilometre road network comprising tunnels, viaducts and interchanges, designed to improve accessibility, safety and connectivity across the territories of the central Apennines.
