Webuild: New Genoa Breakwater reaches 1.5 kilometres in length

New milestone for one of the largest maritime infrastructure projects under construction in Europe

Milan, August 10, 2026Construction of the New Genoa Breakwater continues at a rapid pace. The project is being delivered by the PerGenova Breakwater Consortium, led by Webuild, on behalf of the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea. With today’s installation of a new mega caisson, the breakwater has reached approximately 1.5 kilometres in total length, marking further progress on one of the most complex maritime engineering projects underway in Europe.

This achievement confirms the acceleration of offshore activities and the high execution capability achieved by the project, which is set to transform the Port of Genoa into one of the most modern and competitive maritime hubs in the Mediterranean, strengthening the role of both the city and Italy on international logistics routes.

Alongside the caisson installation operations, seabed consolidation activities are continuing. This work is essential to ensuring the stability of the infrastructure. Work is also progressing on the construction of the superstructure, the most visible part of the dam, designed to reduce the effect of the impact of the waves.

Cossi Costruzioni, the subsidiary specialising in the delivery of complex projects, is also engaged in the construction activities. Its contribution further demonstrates the strength of Webuild’s integrated industrial model, which leverages the expertise, production capacity, operational synergies and people across its subsidiaries to tackle highly complex engineering challenges and accelerate the delivery of strategic infrastructure projects for the country.

The project is taking shape on a seabed reaching depths of up to 50 metres, a condition that makes every installation phase particularly complex and requires the coordinated deployment of specialised marine equipment, advanced technologies and highly skilled personnel engaged in monitoring, control and support activities at on land, at sea, and underwater.

The New Genoa Breakwater represents a strategic project to enhance the Port of Genoa and its connections to domestic and European markets. The project contributes to enhancing logistics flows towards Northern Italy and the main European corridors. Once completed, the port will be able to accommodate next-generation ships, benefiting the capacity and competitiveness of the entire port system.
