Webuild: the President of the Campania Region and artist Anish Kapoor visit Monte Sant’Angelo Metro Station in Naples

New Art Station built by Webuild will enrich city's underground artistic heritage

The visit anticipates the imminent official opening of the new station of Line 7, which will take place after final checks for its commissioning are completed

The project is part of the 14 metro stations built by Webuild in Naples, including some of the most iconic "Art Stations" like the multi-awarded Toledo station

Milan, September 11, 2025 – A new masterpiece of engineering and contemporary art built by Webuild is set to enrich the underground artistic heritage of Naples. The Monte Sant’Angelo Station on the new Line 7 was visited today by the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, and world-famous artist Anish Kapoor, creator of the two monumental sculptures that define the infrastructure. The visit anticipates the station's official imminent opening, scheduled after the final checks currently underway for the commissioning of the first section of Line 7, between the Soccavo and Monte Sant'Angelo stops.

Monte Sant'Angelo Station, built by Webuild on behalf of EAV (Ente Autonomo Volturno), the implementing entity of the Campania Region, is located in the Fuorigrotta neighbourhood. It will be a new "Art Station" in the city’s metro scenario. The two exits, one inside the campus of the University of Naples Federico II (Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II) and the other in the Rione Traiano neighbourhood, are scenographically enhanced by Kapoor's works, which evoke the myth of the Cumaean Sibyl as narrated in the Aeneid, transforming passengers' access to the station into a powerful visual metaphor of descent into the Underworld.

A distinctive feature of the station is the monumental sculpture located at the university campus exit: a cyclopean structure weighing 220 tonnes and standing 19 metres in height, shaped like a mouth that envelops the escalators and guides passengers on an immersive journey into the station. The other sculpture at the Rione Traiano exit is also designed as a mouth that introduces visitors into the station. It reaches 11 metres in height and weighs over 42 tonnes. The underground environment is developed entirely on a single level that slopes downwards. It is clad in spritz-beton, a material reminiscent of a cave’s interior, further strengthening the mythological imagery. Connections between the train platform and the entrances are provided by escalators and distinctive inclined lifts, inspired by the city's funiculars.

The public opening of the station and activation of the first section of Line 7, also known as "Bretella di Monte Sant'Angelo", will connect the western area of Naples with the city centre and the Phlegrean area, thanks to the interchange at Montesanto between the Circumflegrea and Cumana lines, two railways linking downtown Naples to the Phlegrean area. The new section will also offer further interconnection opportunities with the existing metro system: at Montesanto with the funicular and Line 2, and with the nearby stops at Piazza Dante and Toledo on Line 1, therefore strengthening the overall regional and urban public transport system and offering a sustainable mobility alternative in a highly urbanized area.

Monte Sant'Angelo is one of 14 metro stations built by Webuild in Naples. The Group has played a key role in constructing 10 of the 20 stations currently in operation on Line 1, including some of the most iconic "Art Stations", like Toledo (which was internationally multi-awarded), as well as Università, Dante, Museo and Materdei. In Naples, Webuild is also currently working on the Capodichino station on Line 1, the Parco San Paolo stop on Line 7, the second of four stations planned for this line, and the doubling of the Cumana railway line, which connects Naples with Pozzuoli, along a section measuring approximately 5 kilometres between the Dazio and Cantieri stations.
