Webuild: Rogun Dam reaches 1,155 metres above sea level

The increase in the dam’s height will enable the reservoir water level to reach an elevation of 1,140 metres above sea level, increasing hydropower generation from two turbines already in operation 

A strategic project for Tajikistan and Central Asia, Rogun will double country's electricity production with 3,600 MW of installed capacity

MILAN, August 25, 2026 – Webuild has achieved a new milestone in the construction of the Rogun hydropower dam in Tajikistan by raising the height of the structure to an elevation of 1,155 metres above sea level. This increase in height will allow the surface level of the water in the reservoir to be raised by a further 40 metres, reaching 1,140 metres above sea level. The increase in the reservoir’s capacity will enhance the power generation of the two turbines already in operation, boosting the country's electricity supply.

One of the project's distinctive features is that the plant is generating electricity as it is being built. This latest milestone will provide the turbines with more water at their disposal. With more head, they can increase their output. For Tajikistan, this means more electricity production while the dam is being completed.

Webuild is working on Lot 2 of the project, worth approximately US$2.3 billion, on behalf of OJSC Rogun HPP. When finished, the dam will stand 335 metres high, making it the tallest in the world. Equipped with six 600 MW turbines with a total installed production capacity of 3,600 MW, the dam will double Tajikistan's capacity to produce electricity.

Work on Lot 2 is on schedule across multiple fronts, including the raising of the height of the dam’s structure and making the base waterproof. With the dam’s structure having reached 1,155 metres above sea level, it stands at approximately 190 metres out of a planned 335 metres. To date, approximately 49 million cubic metres of material have been placed, representing more than half the total volume, while more than 500,000 linear metres of drilling have been completed for the consolidation of the base and the construction of the grout curtain.

Rogun’s importance to the country was recently affirmed by a visit from the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon. On his latest tour of the project, he was accompanied by Prime Minister Qohir Rasulzoda and other government representatives, inspecting the work’s progress along with representatives of the client and national institutions.

Rogun is one of the most significant energy infrastructures under construction worldwide. It is a project that will reshape the energy future of Tajikistan and the wider Central Asian region. It is financed by the World Bank, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, and other international financial institutions. In delivering Rogun, Webuild draws on a proven track record that includes 320 dams and hydropower plants, among them iconic works such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the largest of its kind in Africa.
