Webuild: second macrophase begins at Venezia Station project on Rome’s Metro Line C
With the Metro C Consortium, Webuild delivers two archeological stations in historic centre: Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali
First macrophase completed, including archeological excavations up to 85 metres deep, archeological digs, and consolidation and restoration works
Roman and medieval structures uncovered, including traces of ancient Via Flaminia
Line C confirms its role as a strategic project for Rome, with 29 km of lines and 31 stations currently planned, including Section T1, of which 23 km and 24 stations have already been completed between Monte Compatri/Pantano and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali
ROME, November 16, 2025 – Starting November 16, construction of the Venezia Station on Line C of Rome’s metro network enters its second macro phase. Following completion of the first macrophase – which included the installation of diaphragm walls and internal slabs, as well as archeological excavations – the second one will focus on completing the station box and related works. The project, managed by the Metro C consortium led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori on behalf of Roma Metropolitane for the City of Roma, is among the most complex and strategic undertakings in the historic heart of the Italian capital.
The first macrophase, begun in June 2023 with the relocation of utilities and the implementation of measures to safeguard artistic and historic sites, achieved several milestones: 124 diaphragm walls have been built (91 permanent and 33 cross walls) up to 85 metres deep and 1.5 metres thick, in addition to 18 additional walls constructed for the fire shaft on Via dei Fori Imperiali. Excavation totaled 35,000 cubic metres, followed by the pouring of 35,000 cubic metres of concrete and the use of 4,700 tons of steel.
In order to protect nearby historic monuments, more than 1,500 monitoring instruments were installed on churches and historic buildings, including the Basilica Ulpia, Trajan’s Forum, and Palazzo Bonaparte. Archeological excavations, launched in May 2025 under the supervision of the Special Superintendency of Rome, uncovered Roman and medieval structures, including traces of the ancient Via Flaminia and residential complexes linked to multi-storied residential buildings known as “insulae” in ancient Rome.
The latest macrophase will involve soil consolidation, completion of the station box with additional diaphragm walls and soil consolidation, final utility relocations, and a new archeological excavation down by up to 4-5 metres below the ground level. In parallel, a shaft will also be dug on Via dei Fori Imperiali.
For Line C, Webuild has built the new archeo-stations Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali, scheduled to open to the public in December. Once completed, the entire Line C will stretch for 29 km with 31 stations (including the future T1 section currently in the design phase). In addition to Venezia Station, Webuild with the Metro C consortium is also working on Section T2, approximately 4 kilometres long, connecting stations Venezia and Clodio/Mazzini and passing under the Tiber River. This section will have four stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (with an interchange to Line A) and Clodio/Mazzini. The stations Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro will be archeo-stations designed to enhance the area’s historic heritage and integrate with the urban fabric.
