Final stretch for Genoa Bridge: bridge deck passes 650-metre mark with installation of latest section over Polcevera River

MILAN, March 10, 2020 – With the setting of the last pier on February 18, workers have picked up the pace as they approach the completion of the bridge in Genoa. Today, they installed a 100-metre section of the deck that stretches above the Polcevera River. This latest milestone, achieved by Salini Impregilo and its joint-venture partner Fincantieri, brings to 650 metres the combined length of the installed sections that will make up the deck, covering 11 of 19 spans that will be part of the completed structure. Work continues at various stations throughout the site contemporaneously.
Work on the bridge, which is progressing in respect of all the safety measures much like every other project overseen by Salini Impregilo, can see up to 600 people on site on a given day. The number rises to 1,000 when taking into account suppliers. Commitment to the project on the part of the workers is on display throughout the site: from the assembly of the sections of the deck to the installation of sidings and other fixtures to the sections already raised on the piers.
Today’s installation of the latest section of the deck was done between Piers 9 and 10. At 40 metres above the river, the section is 94 metres long and weighs 1,800 tonnes. The operation entailed transporting the section across the river with the use of remote-controlled wheeled platforms that were used to take away demolished pieces of the old Morandi Bridge. The platforms carried the section across a bank of earth raised on the riverbed. Once in position, the section was hoisted by strand jacks at a speed of five metres per hour until it reached the top of the piers.
