MILAN, November 20, 2019 – The first 150 metres of the new bridge over the Polcevera River in Genoa is taking shape. Workers of PERGENOVA, a joint effort between Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri, raised and installed a third section of the deck as they follow a tight schedule to prepare another three sections, including the first to be placed on the eastern side of the river. 

Workers placed the third section of the deck between Pier 6 and Pier 7 on the western side. Measuring 50 metres in length, it weighs 500 tonnes. The bridge will have a continuous steel deck running for 1,067 metres with 18 piers, eight of which are already in position. The spans will number 19.

The shape of the piers is the result of an architectural choice for a more efficient construction process that will lead to a structure that blends easily in the urban environment. On the piers will rest a deck made of steel and concrete. The steel part of the deck is made of three sections whose shape makes it quick to assemble and put in place.

The bridge is a public work that will have a limited impact on the environment. It will have solar panels that will generate enough electricity to power its lights, sensors and other systems, representing best practice at the international level. It will have a data base. The information it gathers from constant monitoring of the structure will be available for the design and planning of future infrastructure.

The construction of the bridge has been a visual spectacle since the beginning, with six webcams following the activity on site. At every hour of the day and every day of the week, they transmit images to the web site www.pergenova.com.

Another witness to the project is Spazio Ponte, an exhibition space that invites the public to experience virtually the construction of the bridge, as well as reflect on the future of infrastructure, the sustainable mobility sector in particular. It is a sector in which Salini Impregilo, which is pursuing an industrial operation called Progetto Italia to consolidate the construction industry in the country, is a leader. The Group is working on some of the world’s most important projects in the sector, including Grand Paris Express, Sydney Metro Northwest, Red Line North Underground in Doha, Line 3 of the Riyadh metro system and the first true high-speed railway in Texas.
