MILAN, December 15, 2019 – The new bridge over the Polcevera River being built in Genoa by the PERGENOVA joint-venture between Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri is taking shape, with the raising of the first section of the deck on the east side between Piers 14 and 15 in Campasso Park. It is the area that suffered the most from the tragic collapse of the Morandi Bridge last year. On the west side, 150 metres of the deck have already been installed.

Cranes lifted the 50-metre-long section weighing 560 tonnes about 35 metres into the air to have it installed on the piers. Once completed, the bridge will have a continuous steel deck 1,067 metres in length, with 18 piers and 19 spans. Salini Impregilo is doing all the work in reinforced concrete while the steel sections are supplied by Fincantieri Infrastructure’s plants in Valeggio sul Mincio, Castellammare di Stabia and Sestri Ponente.

Work is progressing on the completion of three more piers after the installation of the first 10. Assembly of the next sections for the west and east sides of the deck is also under way. The construction of the bridge, which saw demolition of the old structure done by explosives on June 28, is going ahead day and night despite poor weather conditions. It will follow its steady pace during the holiday season with the exception of December 25 and 26.
