MILAN, February 7, 2020 – Workers are in the final stretch to completing the piers of the new bridge over the Polcevera River in Genoa, putting the finishing touches to Piers 12 and 17 on the project being developed by Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri in the joint-venture, PerGenova.

Work on the project is spread across 20 sites, with people busy on various fronts simultaneously above and below ground as well as in the air. The last two concrete piers will bring to completion all 18 of these structures, some standing as high as 40 metres. When taking into account how deep their respective piles go underground, the total length of some them can reach 90 metres - as tall as a high-rise building.

The other work being done in parallel is the raising of the bridge’s deck, section by section. The eighth has just been raised, becoming the third on the east side of the river in the Parco Campasso area between Piers 13 and 14. It weighs 456 tonnes. It brings to 400 metres the total length of the sections installed. It will also be the first section under which drivers will be able to pass and observe from the road. Preparations are already under way for the installation of the first section of 100 metres, one of three that will stretch over the Polcevera River.

With all these activities occurring simultaneously, the site can at peak times have some 600 workers on site on a given day - about one for every two metres of the bridge. That number nearly doubles to more than 1,000 when taking into account suppliers and subcontractors.
