Genova’s New Bridge exceeds 1,000 metres, countdown towards last 50 metres to complete structure

PRESS NOTES

MILAN, April 21, 2020 – The second last span of the deck for Genoa’s new bridge was raised today at the work site that never sleeps with preparations being made to install the final 50-metre span between Piers 11 and 12 in the coming days when the Genovese will finally be able to see the completed structure being built by Salini Impregilo (Webuild) and Fincantieri. With today’s installation, the fifth to be done this month, the deck’s length has reached more than 1,000 metres out of a total of 1,067. Work is being done in parallel with the strictest safety measures in the face of the coronavirus (COVID-19) to prepare for the installation of the bridge’s technological features.

The latest span was set today between Piers 2 and 3. At a length of 44 metres, it weighs nearly 940 tonnes including the lateral sections. The bridge deck is being prepared to be lowered 26 centimetres onto its permanent bearings. Its base will then be covered with reinforced concrete 21 centimetres thick to prepare for the paved road surface. Work is also proceeding on the technological apparatus that will power the bridge and collect data.

All the stages of construction can be viewed in a three-dimensional video that shows the various work sites proceeding contemporaneously. The complex engineering techniques used to build the project in record time are also shown.
