U.S. highway contract worth $582 million (€509 million)
Contributing to major upgrade to mobility in Florida
Major improvements along one of Central Florida’s most important highways
Project to reconfigure Interstate 4 and State Road 429 interchange with new express lanes and bridges
Webuild–Lane synergy further strengthens Group’s presence in United States
MILAN, April 9, 2026 – Lane, the U.S. subsidiary of Webuild, will help enhance connectivity in Florida with the “Moving I-4 Forward – Project 2.” Under a $582-million contract (€509 million, fully awarded to Lane), the company will design and build a key segment of a broader initiative to modernise I-4. The work will improve a corridor that passes by some of the world’s most visited theme parks and rapidly growing communities, supporting the region’s heavy flow of tourism and trade.
Commissioned by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the contract entails upgrading and expanding approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) of I-4 to ease the heavy and often slow flow of traffic at one of the highway’s critical points where I-4 meets State Road 429.
The work to be done by Lane will ensure smoother traffic flow, improve the quality of life for nearby residents, and enhance evacuation resilience in case of an emergency. The new configuration includes four general-use lanes and two express lanes in each direction, with direct connections that eliminate complex weaving by streamlining transitions between Interstate-4 and State Road 429.
One of the most delicate components of the work will be the widening of Old Lake Wilson Road, which will be transformed from a simple connector into a human-scale corridor featuring protected sidewalks and bike lanes. The I-4 median will also be prepared to accommodate a potential future optional rail corridor.
The project is part of the “Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative” promoted by FDOT to adapt the road network to the region’s steady growth. It involves the construction of two express lanes in each direction along Interstate 4 (I-4) between Polk and Orange counties, an essential upgrade to optimise traffic flows in the central part of the state.
The accelerated schedule will allow the infrastructure to become operational significantly earlier than originally planned. In addition to ensuring a substantial reduction in congestion and travel times, the project aims to raise safety and connectivity standards, delivering a resilient and fully integrated transportation network.
Lane is deeply rooted in Florida, where it has operated for decades. The company currently has 11 active projects in the state and maintains a direct presence along I-4, with four active construction sites within an 80-kilometer (50-mile) radius of the new segment. This long-standing presence provides tangible advantages for the project, including direct knowledge of traffic patterns, a well-established network of suppliers and partners, validated logistics strategies, and personnel already experienced with the same infrastructure.
Lane’s connection with Webuild enhances its strong U.S. footprint with Webuild’s global expertise, which includes a track record of more than 82,700 kilometres (51,387 miles) of roads and highways built worldwide. The new contract further strengthens the Group’s contribution to U.S. infrastructure development, where it is already delivering projects ranging from upgrades along I-85 in North Carolina to the modernization of Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, a U.S. Naval Force air base in Virginia. In Florida, in addition to ongoing intersection improvements at I-4/Sand Lake Road and I-4/State Road 535 in Orange County, the Group is developing the Westshore Interchange, FDOT’s largest initiative in the Tampa Bay area, and the Seminole Expressway/State Road 417.
