Malaysia: Ulu Jelai dam RCC concrete works completed

NEWS

September 25, 2015 - Another milestone has been reached in the Ulu Jelai hydro-electrical project in Malaysia with the completion of the RCC (Roller Compacted Concrete) works on the Susu Dam,  a specialised process involving the continual laying down of thin layers of concrete, carefully compacted one by one.

The Ulu Jelai hydroelectric project site is located approximately 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur in the state of Pahang, and consists of three different lots. The second lot (Lot CW2-EM1) represents the main component of the project. The work on this lot includes the construction of the Susu Dam on the Bertam River, more than 80 metres high and entirely constructed using the advanced RCC technology, with a total volume of about 750,000 m3.

Morever, the project involves the construction of an underground Power able to house two Francis turbines, with a power output of 191 MW each, and the construction of approximately 26 km of tunnels, 15 km will be approximately excavated with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and the remaining with the traditional method (Drilling and Blasting - NATM). The total installed power of the system will be 382 MW.

The Ulu Jelai project, which has already received international recognition for Safety and other factors, is very important for Pahang’s socioeconomic development. It will boost national energy production, which will consequently attract more foreign investments in the Country.
