Malesia: impounding per il progetto Ulu Jelai

January 18, 2016 – A further significant milestone has been achieved in the Ulu Jelai hydro-electrical project in Malaysia with the commencement of the impounding phase, bringing the project closer to the completion. The gates of the bottom outlet have been partially closed and the water starts to be stored in the 3,5km long reservoir. 

The ceremony has been held in the presence of TNB Management, future owner of the Power Plant, the Designer, the Engineer, Salini Impregilo staff and the local authorities. The event has been attended by the Pahang State Princess Tengku Aishah, who had the honour to close the gates and allow the beginning of the impounding.

The project involves also the construction of an underground Powerhouse able to house two Francis turbines, with a power output of 191 MW each, and the construction of approximately 26 km of tunnels,  of which  approximately 15 km excavated with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and the remaining with the traditional method (Drilling and Blasting - NATM).

The total installed power of the system will be 382 MW.

The Ulu Jelai project, which has already received international recognition for Safety issues, is very important for Pahang's socio-economic development. It will boost national energy production, which will consequently attract more foreign investments in the Country
