MILAN, May 25, 2019 – It will take 12 minutes to reach Piazza San Babila in the heart of Milan from the Linate city airport with M4, the new metro line that will provide the world’s fastest connection between an airport terminal and a city centre. This feat will be explained in further detail today during an “Open Day” event that will allow the public to visit for free the site of the future station at the airport. M4 is being built by a consortium led by Salini Impregilo.

Following the success of the “Open Day” of 2018 when more than 10,000 people took part, technical experts will again receive visitors to explain the project. Part of a wider city initiative called Open House Milano 2019, the event will open the Linate station - the first on the line that will come into operation - between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The M4, which is being financed by both public and private funds, will be 15 kilometres long and have 21 stations. It will enable passengers to cross Milan along an east-west axis in 30 minutes either way. At the western end of the line will be the San Cristoforo station. The M4 is to come into service in 2021, with trains running between Linate and Forlanini FS stations. The following year, it will extend service to the Dateo station and then to San Babila by December 2022.

This strategic public work makes Milan one of the most active cities in promoting sustainable mobility. Once in operation, the M4 will be able to transport 86 million people a year. By helping take 16 million vehicles off the city’s streets every year as a result, it will see a reduction in CO2emission of up to 54,000 tonnes.

The M4 represents one of nine metro projects in which Salini Impregilo is helping build throughout the world to improve urban and extra-urban mobility in cities whose streets are clogged with traffic. They include the Red Line in Doha, Qatar, one of the main projects in the Middle East; Line 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and Cityringen in Copenhagen, Denmark. All of these are multi-billion-dollar projects that allow Salini Impregilo to bring its engineering excellence to the world. The Group is also applying its expertise to strengthen Italy by means of its Progetto Italia (Project Italy), the industrial operation aimed at consolidating the country’s infrastructure sector.
