New Genoa Bridge: Webuild, Fincantieri at work on installed structure and raising of new deck sections

MILAN, April 3, 2020 – Activity at the site of the new Genoa bridge remains apace as Salini Impregilo (Webuild) and Fincantieri, together in the PerGenova joint-venture, prepares to complete work on the installed part of the structure and raise the last remaining sections of the deck. It is going ahead at a time of national emergency caused by the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The dedication shown by the workers is deeply appreciated by the joint-venture. They do it while respecting the strict safety guidelines that have been imposed at the site.
Construction of the new bridge in Genoa, is a race against time amid preparations for the imminent raising of a new section of the deck that will bring the structure’s installed length to more than 900 metres.
The operation will be done a few days after the installation of a section of the bridge in three tranches between Abutment A and Pier 1 with the use of two temporary towers. Meanwhile, an abutment is being fastened to Pier 18. A temporary tower will allow the work to be divided in two in light of the steep ground. The next section to be raised will be the 14th out of a total of 19 deck sections, measuring 50 metres in length and weighing nearly 480 tonnes. It will be hoisted between Piers 12 and 13.
In addition to the removal of the ford that was built to facilitate the raising of a deck section over the Polcevera River, work has resumed on the highway access ramp on the western side. Groundwork to allow for the raising of the sections is being done in parallel with the complex preparations for the base of the installed deck. Workers will pump 8,000 cubic metres of concrete across the base by starting at both ends of the bridge at the same time and work their way towards the centre.
All the site’s activities are being done contemporaneously in order to deliver to Genoa and its residents their bridge as soon as possible.
The construction site of the new bridge has adopted extraordinary measures, such as measuring the body temperature of every worker who enters the site, distributing hand sanitisers and installing disinfectant gel dispensers, enforcing the safe distance rule, cleaning and disinfecting work sites and common areas, and reducing the number of people who can travel in the same vehicle to and from the site. In addition, all workers have protection masks whose use is obligatory when they are close to their colleagues. These measures are but a summary of what has been adopted at the site, much like those at sites elsewhere in the world operated by the Salini Impregilo Group as it confronts the health emergency with a task force that is operating at a global level.
