Riyadh Metro, Orange Line: TBM Launching Ceremony

July 8, 2015 - Prince Faisal bin Bandar, Governor of Riyadh, has officially launched the giant Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named Jazlah to be used on the Orange Line of the Riyadh Metro currently under construction by the ArRiyadh New Mobility Consortium (ANM). Jazlah, 10 m in diameter and weighing approx. 700 tons, started boring on the 5.8 km tunnel in the downtown of Riyadh and will pass through the Riyadh main Train Station. It is 10 m in diameter and weighs approx. 700 tons.
Salini Impregilo is leader of ANM, responsible for the 41.2 km Orange line, the longest line of Riyadh Metro. The route is mostly elevated along the western part of Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah Road, then underground in bored and mined tunnels in the central section of the line, and generally at grade along Prince Saad Ibn Abdulrahman Road in the east. This line features 22 stations among which there are the two iconic station named Qasr Al-Hokm and Western designed by Snøhetta and Omrania and aimed to become a landmark in the city. The line includes also 6 'Park&Ride' that will contribute in the future to the integration between transportation systems.
There are almost 6 million residents in Riyadh and the population is expected to reach over 8 million by 2030. The Riyadh metro is aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing pollution by cutting the number of vehicles on the city roads. It will therefore provide a better and more efficient transportation alternative.
