Salini Impregilo: full commitment on Genova Bridge construction

MILAN, October 31, 2019 – Workers are set to install in early November the second section of the deck of the bridge in Genova being built by Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri. After having finished installing Piers 4, 5 and 6 –which support the first section of the deck - they are nearing the completion of Piers 7 and 9. Progress is also being made on Pier 8.
The bridge over the Polcevera river valley promises to become an iconic structure for Italy. It will be the first tangible example of what can be expected from Progetto Italia, Salini Impregilo’s plan to consolidate in the country’s fragmented infrastructure sector. Already at work on the bridge are experts from Cossi Costruzioni, a company on the verge of bankruptcy acquired by Salini Impregilo and whose expertise has been put to work.
Conceived by Renzo Piano, the bridge will be 1,067 metres long with 18 piers of reinforced concrete and 19 spans that will make up the continuous steel deck. Its structure will be majestic and sustainable, with solar panels that will make it self-sufficient in electricity. Inside, dehumidifiers will prevent corrosion.
This high level of innovation will also extend to the centralised system that will monitor the safety and soundness of the structure with the help of robots, which will conduct inspections and provide regular maintenance.
Along with Fincantieri and Italferr, Salini Impregilo is proud to take part in a project that will serve as an example of how Italy can recover thanks to cooperation between the public and private sectors. The new bridge enable Genova to become a European hub for international trade and cargo transport to northern Europe.
