MILAN, February 13, 2020 – Work on completing the last of the 18 piers of the Genoa bridge comes to a close in record time as the first of three 100-metre spans is installed by PerGenova, the joint-venture between Salini Impregilo and Fincantieri.

The span was raised more than 40 metres into the air and placed between Piers 8 and 9. The steel structure measures precisely 94 metres in length and weighs 1,800 tonnes. Also raised were 14 sidings that resemble wings along the side of the future bridge, as well as the fittings such as the sections that will facilitate the pouring of concrete.

In light of the span’s weight, cranes were eschewed for strand jacks, which used cables to hoist the span into place at a speed of five metres per hour.

The bridge has come to represent a new way of building complex infrastructure, in which private companies and public institutions come together to develop within an adequate time frame a project needed by the country. Such is the concept behind Progetto Italia, the industrial operation led by Salini Impregilo to relaunch the construction sector in Italy by encouraging collaboration between the private and public sectors to unblock stalled projects and project jobs.
