Webuild, Tunnelling Contractor of the Year

NEWS

November 26, 2015 - A jury of 18 international experts have named Salini Impregilo "Contractor of the Year" from a shortlist of Chinese, American and European competitors at the  2015 International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) International Tunnelling Awards Conference held in Hagerbach, Switzerland.

The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), is a non-profit and non-governmental body that represents everyone involved in underground work, such as builders, designers and universities. It promotes the use of underground space as a solution for sustainable development. Founded in 1974 with its head offices in Lausanne, Switzerland, the ITA has 71 member nations and 200 affiliated members.

The ITA gave our Group the award for its performance in the sector throughout the year 2015. Tunnelling and other underground work responds successfully to the growing need for infrastructure, especially in cases that demand an efficient use of space and resources. It is often a necessary choice, even if very difficult from a technical point of view, as demonstrated by the Lake Mead intake project, which involved the construction of a tunnel nearly  170 metres below the maximum waters surface level. Transportation is another area for challenging underground works. The Brenner Base Tunnel by Salini Impregilo will be the longest underground railway connection in the world. Salini Impregilo is also present in Peru with the Lima metro, in Copenhagen with the Cityringen project and in Doha, with the Red Line North.
