MILAN, June 19, 2020 – The tireless work of technicians and workers has seen them complete today the pouring of concrete along the base of the deck of Genoa’s new bridge that is being built by Webuild (formerly Salini Impregilo) and Fincantieri, concluding an important phase that brings them closer to delivering the structure by early summer.

For two weeks, they poured 8,000 cubic metres of concrete on 2,000 tonnes of reinforced steel under weather conditions that were not always favourable. The work by the workers at the cement factory, the drivers of the mixer trucks, the operators of the concrete pumps, the layers of the concrete and the technicians on the ground was done in lockstep with that done by those installing the final fixtures along the technologically smart bridge. With the base completed, workers will proceed to paving over it to create the road. There will be the waterproofing as well as the installation of guardrails, cables, drainage and safety systems, lighting, solar panels and robots for a constant monitoring of the bridge’s structure. Then there will be the 18 light posts along the length of the deck. The bridge will then be ready for the load test that will involve trucks loaded with heavy materials driving across it to ensure the structure is ready to be opened for traffic.

Even after the opening, work will continue below the bridge to clear the construction site, bringing to an end a project that, thanks to the team spirit shared with the suppliers and public officials, saw about 1,000 people involved on the site, overcoming the challenges posed by time constraints, technical difficulties, the weather of a city by the sea and an unprecedented global pandemic. The construction site was one of the first in Italy to adopt measures to protect workers from the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) thanks to coordination with the public authorities and related parties. This commitment to work safety accompanied the daily effort to build a symbolic and strategic structure for transport at one of Europe’s most important ports.
