The Valico Bypass has been inaugurated: the story of a european engineering challenge

PRESS NOTES

The Salini Impregilo Group Participates in the Construction of the Improvement of the Apennine Section between Sasso Marconi and Barberino del Mugello

Castiglione dei Pepoli, December 23, 2015 - Today, the Valico Bypass, in the presence of the Italian Prime Minister, Mr Matteo Renzi, has been finally inaugurated. A work that has been realised in order to upgrade the A1 Milan-Naples Motorway, the memorable motorway that allowed the connection of the North and South of Italy. The Salini Impregilo Group, a world leader in infrastructure projects, participates at the construction of the Valico Bypass.

The Valico Bypass measures 59 km and crosses the Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany Regions, and nine Municipalities: the work is worth 4.1 billion euro. As a whole, it includes 45 interventions, of which 23 viaducts and 22 tunnels, with over 28 km realized in tunnels, and over 10 Km of viaducts, while the remaining interventions (20 km) are built at a natural soil level or as a trench. The new route will be approximately 3km shorter than the current one. The road section is composed of three lanes (including an emergency lane) for each direction.

The lots managed by the Salini Impregilo Group (lots 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the total 13 that make up the whole project) are part of the most significant intervention of the Valico Bypass, in the Appenine section between Sasso Marconi and Barberino del Mugello.  The intervention mainly consists of the work symbolising the Valico Bypass, i.e., the Base Tunnel: a tunnel with separate carriageways measuring approximately 8.6 km in length and with a minimum section of 180 m2. The section measures in all 11.2 km and, in addition to the Base Tunnel, entails the construction of three viaducts (Badia Nuova Viaduct, Setta I Viaduct and Casaglia Viaduct). The Badia Interchange has also been built with an additional four on-ramps/off-ramps and related works for the toll booth; the value of the lots managed by Salini impregilo, in total, amounts to more than 700 million euro. The project involved 1,300 people (direct employees and supplied workers).

The project, for its realisation, required technical and engineering challenges of excellence, due to the unique characteristics of the rock layers of the territory involved. Salini Impregilo, with the construction of the Valico Bypass, confirms its leadership in Italy and abroad with regard to the construction of high professional profile infrastructure works using advanced innovative technological solutions.
