Webuild: completed Eni's New Headquarters in San Donato Milanese, symbol of sustainability and engineering excellence

LEED Gold Certification for sustainability features

Complex designed by architecture firm Morphosis, involving 3,000 people in its construction and about 400 suppliers

Webuild Nuovo Centro Direzionale Eni

SAN DONATO MILANESE, Italy, May 18, 2023 – Eni Chairman Giuseppe Zafarana, Eni Chief Executive Claudio Descalzi, accompanied by Webuild Chief Executive Pietro Salini, visited today Eni’s new headquarters built by Webuild in the presence of San Donato Milanese Mayor Francesco Squeri and Deputy Mayor Carlo Barone. Emanuele Caniggia, Chief Executive of DeA Capital Real Estate, which manages the complex, and GWM Managing Partner and Group Chairman Roberto Tamburrini, an investor in the fund, also took part in the visit.

The new headquarters for Italian energy giant ranks among the world's most innovative green buildings, covering an area of 65,000 square metres with accommodation for up to 4,600 people. The complex of buildings is located in San Donato Milanese in southeast Milan on the grounds of Metanopoli, Eni's historic district.

The complex was built using avantgarde engineering techniques, bringing together functionality and beauty to go beyond the traditional canon for civil buildings and giving the city a building with innovative characteristics.

Webuild adopted many innovative solutions that make it more sustainable. The complex is in line with LEED Gold Certification requirements, the most important in the world in recognising a civil building’s green credentials. The quality of the indoor air is guaranteed by the use of paint and materials for the interiors that are low in toxicity. The façade uses special glass windows with reduced internal thermal emission, while the rooftops are covered with solar panels

The complex of three interconnected towers, designed by U.S. architecture firm Morphosis, features green spaces and a large indoor plaza on a white marble base covering approximately 12,000 square metres. The Icon Tower is the tallest of the three with 11 floors It hosts the canteen on the ground floor. The Landmark Tower is the biggest, covering 23,700 square metres on nine floors. The Skygarden Tower is the central building with a conference centre at the base. The three towers are connected by bridges with a distinctive design, as well as functional elements. The Landmark and Icon towers are connected by a bridge with a span of 85 metres, which becomes 68 metres for the connection between the Icon and the Skygarden towers.

The complex rises up in sinuous architectural forms. The facades are characteristic, covering a total of 40,000 square metres of the complex, whose design is inspired by the geological formation of the Earth, visible through the optical effect adopted for the micro-perforated and electro-coloured metal sheet exterior cladding.

The Eni complex will be the latest in a series of iconic buildings built by the Webuild Group throughout the world, which include the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Athens, Greece, which brings together art and technical excellence under a design by architect Renzo Piano. There is also the Al Bayt Stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar where the opening ceremony was held. It stands out for its unique unmistakable profile, inspired by the bayt al sha’ar, the traditional Qatari tent symbolising the typical hospitality of the Arab culture..
