Project will be carried out in a joint-venture with Spain’s Acciona to treat water for about 860,000 residents across 14 municipalities using advanced biological treatment processes

Project to help reopen coastal areas for bathing, supporting city’s tourist sector, local economy and employment

MILAN, March 26, 2026 – Improve the water quality of the Gulf of Naples and support the rehabilitation of a wide stretch of its coastline: this is the aim of an upgrade of a wastewater treatment plant in East Naples, a project worth €111 million awarded to Fisia Italimpianti (a Webuild Group subsidiary, holding a 40-percent share) and Spain’s Acciona. The tender for the project, launched by Invitalia on behalf of the extraordinary commissioner overseeing it, marks an important step in improving the city’s wastewater treatment system and strengthening the reliability of the regional water network.

The project reinforces Webuild’s role in developing strategic infrastructure in Southern Italy. With this new contract, the number of projects it is overseeing in the region rises to 21, for a total awarded value of more than €16 billion. These projects provide jobs for 10,200 people, both directly and indirectly. They involve 7,500 suppliers since the start of activities.

The plant in East Naples, built in the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighbourhood in the late 1990s, will be upgraded with the latest biological treatment processes. It will serve about 860,000 residents in a densely populated area that covers part of the city and the extended metropolitan district, spread across 14 municipalities. The functional upgrade will also contribute to restoring a section of the coastline in eastern Naples, where a broad urban redevelopment programme is planned. This will support the tourism industry by making the coastline suitable for swimming again. The impact will be positive for the local economy and employment.

The project strengthens Webuild’s long-standing relationship with Naples, where it recently won a contract for the first section of Lot 1 for Line 10 of Naples Metro Line. It has built – and is currently working – on 21 stations for the entire metro network. In Campania, it has been active since the 1960s, completing numerous works, including the iconic Naples–Afragola high-speed railway station. The Group is involved in four lots of the Naples–Bari high-speed/high-capacity rail line, and on Lot 1A of the Salerno–Reggio Calabria high-speed/high-capacity rail line – both essential components for the future of sustainable mobility in Southern Italy. They will also be integral parts of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor that will connect the south of Italy with the north Italy and the rest of Europe.

The East Naples project also follows Webuild’s approach to combining the Group’s international experience with the expertise of its subsidiaries. With nearly a century of activity in water treatment and desalination, Fisia Italimpianti is an international centre of excellence for the design and construction of highly complex plants. Its water treatment plants serve more than nine million people worldwide. Meanwhile, its desalination plants supply drinking water to more than 20 million people, particularly in the Middle East. 

This integrated and multidisciplinary industrial approach allows Webuild to manage complex projects with a consistent engineering approach from concept design to commissioning. A recent example is the completion by Fisia Italimpianti of Lot 2 of the Riachuelo System in Buenos Aires, Argentina – one of the world’s largest river restoration initiatives – for which Webuild had previously carried out Lot 3.
