PRESS NOTES

Project represents economic recovery, jobs for southern Italy with more than 1,500 people, 300 direct suppliers

VILLAPIANA, December 14, 2021 – The Mega Lot 3 of the Ionian State Motorway, one of Webuild’s projects in Italy, has come to represent economic recovery and jobs for southern Italy. Giancarlo Cancelleri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sustainable Mobility and Infrastructures visited the work site in Calabria today to witness the installation of the first section of the span for the Satanasso Viaduct, the first of 15 viaducts planned along the stretch of motorway being developed by the Group. Commissioned by state road agency Azienda Nazionale Autonoma delle Strade (ANAS), the motorway is starting to take shape with 25% of the lot completed thanks to the involvement of more than 1,500 workers and more than 300 direct suppliers.

Mega Lot 3 consists of the construction of a new section of the motorway from SS-534 in Sibari to Roseto Capo Spulico. Webuild has opened 27 work sites along the 38-kilometre stretch, 11 of which will be in tunnels and six kilometres across viaducts.  The section will run within one kilometre of the old route to help connect the Ionian coastlines in the regions of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia. It will also connect the A3 motorway with Puglia.

The Ionian Motorway will be a strategic connection for southern Italy. It will be part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), a European initiative to connect transport networks across the continent, guaranteeing an integrated sustainable mobility network across Italy and Europe. The motorway will benefit the region in other ways, including the rehabilitation of the Sibari archeological area.

Webuild’s commitment to southern Italy dates back to the 1930s. It has built more than 280 projects in the region. The Group is currently building 15 major projects in southern Italy such as high-capacity railways between Messina and Catania, and Palermo and Catania in Sicily. It is also working on four sections of the high-speed railway between Naples and Bari, namely Naples-Cancello, Apice-Hirpinia, Hirpinia-Orsara and Orsara-Bovino for a combined total of 74 kilometres.
