MILAN, May 11, 2020 – Webuild, formerly Salini Impregilo, is on the shortlist to design and build the CAN$1.7 billion (€1.15 billion) Valley Line West Light Rail Transit project in Edmonton, Canada, the second stage of the Valley Line, a 27-kilometre line that will operate between the city’s west and southeast districts.

The project for the 14 kilometre-long line will feature 14 stops and two elevated stations, two bridge crossings, connections to transit centres, and a transfer point with current two lines of the LRT system. A preferred proponent is to be chosen by mid-October, with work set to begin on the project in 2021 and be complete in up to six years.

Webuild is on the short list for the sustainable mobility project with other members of the UrbanTransit joint-venture, including FCC Construccion S.A. and IBI Group. Webuild is in the process of acquiring Astaldi, another member of UrbanTransit, as part of Progetto Italia, a plan to consolidate the fragmented construction sector in Italy, their home market. Webuild is already working on other projects with Astaldi. Webuild is the new name of Salini Impregilo to mark the group’s increased scale and resources with its acquisition of Astaldi and several other companies. With Progetto Italia, Webuild aims to use Italy as a base from which to competitive better for projects in international markets.

The group is already working with Astaldi on a light rail transit project in Canada: the €917-million (about CAN$1.3-billion) Hurontario, a 18-kilometre long, 19-stop system between Mississauga and Brampton near Toronto, Ontario. The project marks its return after three decades to Canada, one of the markets where Webuild plans to expand for its low risk profile and plans to invest in infrastructure. Other markets include the United States, Europe and Australia.

With a track record of more than 13,637 kilometres of rail and metro lines, Webuild is a major contributor to the development of urban and extra-urban mobility worldwide, with projects that support efforts to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution by offering safe, efficient and environmentally friendly public transport services. In Copenhagen, it recently inaugurated the Cityringen, a major metro line that encircles the historic centre. In Perth, it is working on the Forresfield-Airport Link, a light rail transit line that will connect the suburbs with the airport and the city centre.
