November 17, 2014 - The third lane of the A4 motorway (the Turin-Trieste motorway) between  Quarto D’Altino and San Donà di Piave, constructed by Salini Impregilo at the helm of a Joint Venture, was inaugurated today eight months in advance.

The motorway section is 18.5 km long and features 5 underpasses, 9 overpasses and 5  bridges, including the bridge crossing over the Piave River. Because of its size and the characteristics of the riverbed, this bridge was a major undertaking requiring particular effort and engineering skills. The concrete bridge consists of 2 separate viaducts: one towards Trieste that is  672 metres long consisting of 7 spans, and the other toward Milan that is 740 metres long divided into 8 spans.

The project is worth €225 million with Salini Impregilo acting as the agent of the contracting Joint Venture. The works involved not only the staff of the undertaking, but also the staff of the Deputy Commissioner for Emergency of transport concerning the A4 motorway (Quarto d’Altino-Trieste) and the Villesse-Gorizia motorway link, as well as the operator Autovie Venete, operational branch of the  Commissioner, which manages over 200 kilometres of motorways. This section inaugurated today is the first of a number of lots included in the construction of the third lane of the A4.

The A4 motorway is a popular long-distance East-West corridor and strategic for the Mediterranean Corridor (formally Corridor V) with the majority of the vehicles in transit to and from Austria, as well as entering and leaving Slovenia.  A total of 43 million vehicles, including 11 million heavy vehicles, travelled through the road network in 2013: an average of 117,800 vehicles per day, peaking at 175 million vehicles during weekends and in the summer.
