The Sfax-Gabes Motorway, part of the Global Project of the Mediterranean axis of the Trans-Maghreb motorway which will connect Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, fits into the Tunisian infrastructural setting as an important communication artery to the south of the country.

The project comprises two lots (Lot 1 and Lot 2), each featuring the construction of approximately 25 km of dual carriage motorway with two lanes in each direction, a hard shoulder and a central reservation.

The project, begun in March 2010, experienced many difficulties in 2011, 2012 and 2013 due to the Tunisian Revolution, leading to operations being suspended several times. In April 2014, the construction sites were reopened. Given the latest service orders, the completion is scheduled in November 2017.
