Line 10: the mega project

The Line 10 mega project, which is being developed in coordination with the City of Naples and the Campania Region (with EAV as the implementing entity), is among the most strategic projects for sustainable mobility in Southern Italy. The new line will extend for approximately 14 kilometres with 12 stations. Once fully operational, it will connect the centre of Naples with the Naples-Afragola high-speed rail station in about 20 minutes. The project will serve the densely populated municipalities in the surrounding area, home to a high number of commuters to Naples. It will offer a sustainable alternative to road transport, enhancing the accessibility of the region and improving integration between regional and national transport networks.

Line 10: Phase 1A of Lot 1

Lot 1 involves the detailed design and construction of the civil works for Line 10, which will be carried out in phases.

Phase 1A will involve building a 6.5-kilometre underground section that will pass through the municipalities of Afragola, Casoria, Casavatore and Naples. It will have 7 stations, of which 3 are to be fully built (Di Vittorio, Casoria Centro, Afragola Centro) and 4 only partially in the first phase (Casavatore San Pietro, Casoria Casavatore, Casoria Afragola, Afragola Garibaldi). The completion of Lot 1 (with the activation of Options 1-2-3, which are still awaiting funding) calls for the subsequent construction of an additional 7.3 kilometres of track to connect the city centre with the Naples-Afragola high-speed rail station. It will include 5 new stations and the completion of the 4 already started in Phase 1A. There will be the construction of a 40,000-square-metre parking facility with a capacity of approximately 1,000 parking spaces to support the Afragola station.

The works will be carried out by the consortium, named Partenope 10, led by Webuild and also comprising Eteria Consorzio Stabile, Costruire, ICM, and M.N. Metropolitana di Napoli

The contract also grants the Consortium the exclusive right to carry out additional works—currently awaiting financing—for the future completion of the line toward the centre of Naples and the Naples-Afragola high-speed railway station.

Line 10: Benefits and Innovation

Line 10 will transform mobility in the northeastern area of Naples, serving a catchment area of over 650,000 residents. It will have an immediate and positive impact on the local economy even during the construction phase: the Phase 1A works alone are estimated to create approximately 700 jobs, including direct and indirect positions: a number that could rise to 1,500 upon the project’s future completion.

Line 10 will also be technologically advanced: it is, in fact, the first “driverless” metro line in Naples, with fully automated and driverless trains. It will be integrated with the existing metro network, ensuring strategic transfer hubs along its route. In the first phase of construction (Phase 1A), the main connection is planned at Di Vittorio Station, where the new line will connect directly with Line 1 and Line 11. This creates a key access point to the city centre and Capodichino Airport

The completion of Lot 1 will allow for the subsequent extension of Line 10 to Piazza Principe Umberto, providing a connection to Lines 1 and 2, the Circumvesuviana Railway, and the national and regional rail networks at the Piazza Garibaldi hub in Naples. In addition to these interconnections, there will be a direct link to the Naples-Afragola high-speed railway station, which is set to consolidate its strategic role as a connection point between the North-South high-speed rail corridor (Rome-Salerno) and the cross-country route to Puglia. At Casoria-Afragola Station, the connection with regional lines will be established via the existing railway station.

Line 10 will help redesign and revitalise the public spaces traversed by the project, making them more orderly and accessible. It will integrate the new stations into the urban fabric and provide the community with new green spaces that will enhance the environment and quality of the landscape in the area. The construction of Line 10 will involve both traditional excavation methods and the use of state-of-the-art tunnel-boring machines. The stations will be built using an integrated set of construction techniques designed to minimise impact on the urban environment. It will be organised across a few functional levels, with direct and intuitive pathways designed to minimise travel distances for passengers.
