Messina - Catania HC Railway Line, Taormina - Giampilieri Section

The project involves the executive design and execution of works to build a new railway line, which approximately extends 28.3 km, in total, including civil works, reinforcements, electrification, signalling and telecommunications. And also, 2 new natural single barrel tunnels, 6 double-barrel ones and 7 viaducts.
The project is part of a new railway line in the Messina - Catania section, which connects to the existing one before the current Fiumefreddo station, subsequently reconnecting to the existing Giampilieri station. The route of the new line develops mainly inside the tunnel. Compared to the existing line, it is located at a greater distance from the coast.
The Sciglio Tunnel is among the main works; with over 9 km in length it also extends over the adjacent Taormina-Fiumefreddo lot and will be the longest tunnel of the entire Giampilieri-Fiumefreddo section.
Three TBMs are used for the tunnel excavation, equipped with dual‑mode systems to adapt to varying ground conditions and with Beam Scan technology to provide continuous geotechnical monitoring during advance.
The work is part of the initiative to develop sustainable mobility, promoted by the European Union, to create the TEN-T European Corridor system, which will connect and improve connections in Europe.
