Riyadh Metro Red Line Extension

The Riyadh Metro Red Line Extension project involves the design and construction of 8.4 km of new driverless metro line, including 7.1 km of underground tunnels and 1.3 km of elevated viaduct. The scope of work also includes the construction of five new metro stations, three of which will be underground, together with the implementation of all signalling systems. Tunnel excavation will be carried out using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).
This project will expand the world's longest automated metro network, a record officially recognized by the Guinness World Records. A key goal of the project is the seamless integration of the new section into Riyadh's urban transit system: a 176-km driverless metro network comprising six lines and inaugurated in December 2025.
The new metro extension will add two additional stations serving King Saud University and provide access to new urban development areas across Riyadh. Most importantly, it will connect the existing Red Line and the wider Riyadh Metro network to Diriyah, the first capital of Saudi Arabia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, at the heart of a landmark development programme designed to transform the area into a premier cultural and tourism destination for the region, while safeguarding its heritage and distinctive traditional Najdi architecture, a landmark project in which Webuild is also involved.
