M4 Metro: urban regeneration in Milan

Metro M4 Milano, Italia

The new metro M4 line in Milan has also changed the surface of the city, making it more sustainable and usable for citizens: trees, soccer fields, gyms, playgrounds for the kids, and bocce courts for the older residents.

The benefits of the M4 on Milan’s city spaces are truly significant: the project has, in fact, redeveloped over 246,000 m2 of urban areas, including over 66,000 m2 of green areas

The construction sites of the 'Blue Line' were designed to allow the preservation of 169 trees and to reduce tree removals by 24% compared to the initial project plans. Furthermore, the City of Milan has committed to planting 1,900 new trees along the line, connecting the many green areas present along the route.

In 2025, the Forlanini Park underwent a massive redevelopment initiative through which over 500 trees were planted.

Since 2022, Viale Argonne, one of the historic avenues in Milan, has become a playground for all. An uninterrupted green area from Piazza Susa to Via Lomellina, with a cycling path, new pedestrian paths, and with new facilities dedicated to wellness, sports, fitness areas, and play areas for all ages.

Webuild: 500 new trees planted in Forlanini Park

Webuild's donation allowed to replant 510 trees to replace the over 300 plants lost during the storm in Parco Forlanini (Forlanini Park). Among the newly planted trees are poplars, lindens, hackberries, willows, oaks, cedars, maple trees and sycamores.

Over 500 new trees have been planted thanks to the donation from the Group, including as many as 20 different species: linden, oak, ash, poplar, maple, cedar, and ginkgo biloba.

Following the violent storm on July 25, 2023, which caused over 5,000 trees to fall in Milan (of which 3,800 were in green areas), Webuild participated as donator in the ‘Milano per gli Alberi’ funding program of the Municipality of Milan.

The trees planted in Parco Forlanini and the green areas included in the M4 project contribute to improve air quality and mitigating the effects of climate change, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Today, it is impossible to think of a building project, especially in a big city, without considering the impact it has especially from the point of view of environmental sustainability but also on people’s quality of life.

The partnership with Milan’s Polytechnic

The new park on Viale Argonne was designed with a high standard of innovation at its foundation. Webuild has signed a partnership with the Milan’s Polytechnic University to design a special material for paving the area. This is a special cement compound that makes the ground more drainable by allowing rainwater to be absorbed by the subsoil.

The new material has also been used in other surface areas, as the redevelopment project has affected the entire 15 kilometers route of the new M4 Metro. From the terminus at Linate to that of San Cristoforo, there are numerous areas under intervention, starting with the pedestrian area in San Babila square.
