The excavation techniques for the Brenner Base Tunnel

The longest railway tunnel in the world

Brenner Base Tunnel: the longest railway tunnel in the world - Geopop/Webuild

Once completed, the 64-kilometre Brenner Base Tunnel will redefine rail connections between Northern and Southern Europe, strengthening sustainable mobility and helping reduce the environmental impact of transport across the Alpine region.

The project is part of the Munich–Verona railway axis and forms the central element of the Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor of the TEN-T network. It is also its most crucial section, as it allows for the crossing of the natural barrier of the Alps.

On May 15, 2025, after traveling more than 14 kilometres beneath the Alps, TBM Flavia has completed excavation works on the Italian side of the Brenner Base Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the world. The milestone occurred within Lot Mules 2-3, delivered by a consortium led by Webuild on behalf of BBT SE
