Webuild: Metro C consortium assigned contract worth nearly €2 billion to design and build extension of Metro Line C in Rome

Four new stations for 4-kilometre Line from Piazza Venezia to Piazzale Clodio/Piazza Mazzini

A consortium led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori to start work in January 2026 following approval of executive design

The consortium is already building Venezia Station and testing/delivering the San Giovanni-Colosseo/Fori Imperiali section of line, which includes two archaeological stations Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali

MILAN, July 1, 2025 Webuild has signed a contract worth approximately €2 billion for the construction of the T2 section of Rome’s Metro Line C. Webuild's share of the contract amounts to €673 million. Commissioned by the city’s metro authority, Roma Metropolitane on behalf of Roma Capitale the contract will have the Metro C consortium led by Webuild in partnership with Vianini Lavori undertake one of the most complex engineering challenges in the city. The new stretch of the line will pass under the Tiber River in an area of exceptional archaeological and urban importance

The T2 section will extend for four kilometres between the Venezia Station and Clodio/Mazzini, adding four new stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (interconnected with Line A), and Clodio/Mazzini. Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro will be archaeological stations, designed to celebrate the city's heritage and integrate it seamlessly with the urban setting.

San Pietro Station, set within the gardens of Castel Sant'Angelo, will be the deepest and most visually striking of the section of the line, descending 48 metres underground. Its design will complement the new layout of the surrounding square while respecting the adjacent monumental structures. Chiesa Nuova Station will be located beneath the square of the same name, near the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella and the Oratorio dei Filippini – both of great historical and artistic value.

One of the most technically challenging aspects of the project includes constructing diaphragms up to approximately 90 metres deep. It will involve using cutting-edge technology already successfully tested during the construction of the Venezia Station. The line will also pass 25 metres below the Tiber.

Webuild is in the final testing phase of the San Giovanni–Colosseo/Fori Imperiali section of Line C, with the archaeological stations Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali scheduled for delivery in September. Once completed, Line C will stretch 26 kilometres and include 29 stations, 22 of which are already operational. It will link the southeastern suburbs of Rome to the northwest.

Webuild has extensive expertise in metro systems, with 891 kilometres of lines built worldwide. In recent months, it has inaugurated the final section of Milan’s M4 line, the Thessaloniki line (Greece’s first driverless metro), and the Orange Line (Line 3) of Riyadh’s metro (the longest in Saudi Arabia). Major ongoing projects include lines 15 West and 16 of the Grand Paris Express in France; lines 2 and 4 of the Lima Metro in Peru; the Sydney Metro–Western Sydney Airport line; and the Suburban Rail Loop East in Melbourne, Australia. In Italy, the Capodichino station on Naples’ Metro Line 1 is nearing completion.
